Speaker Bio:
Dr. Manuela Gabriel currently serves as the Director of the International Center and as the Co-Chair of the Intercultural Advisory Council for the New American Corner at the City of Grand Forks. Her core area of expertise is Intercultural Competency and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Access (DEIA). Gabriel earned a Ph.D. in International and Intercultural Studies from University of Deusto (Spain), an M.A. in Intercultural Mediation from University of Sherbrooke (Canada). Licensed as a qualified administrator to use the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI), Gabriel has been a consultant to many universities, private businesses, and other organizations. She has provided professional development, intercultural competency and DEIA training widely throughout the United States, Latin America, and Europe, as well as assisted different institutions with strategic plans to develop, foster or strengthen their intercultural competency as well as their diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging initiatives.
Chris Nelson is the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies at UND and is an elected member of the Board of the Directors for the Council of Graduate Schools. Nelson earned his PhD at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and worked at Oregon State University prior to coming to the University of North Dakota, where he has served as an Associate Professor in the Department of English. Prior to becoming Dean, he was the Director of Graduate Studies for the MA and PhD programs in English, and then a Faculty Fellow and Associate Dean in the School of Graduate Studies. Nelson implemented N.C. State University's award-winning Accelerate to Industry program at UND, becoming one of only 30+ universities nationwide to develop the program, which focuses on preparing graduate students for the nonacademic workforce through building relationships, internship and employment pipelines with industry, government, and nonprofit entities.
